Germanwings incident

Hey,
today in the German news there was brought up a story of an incident 2010, that was covered down up to now. That were the news once:
http://avherald.com/h?article=434c3290
Now it was reported in a new investigation that the A319 pilots almost became unconscious on approach due to agressive smell, and that it was classified as a severe incident.
I wonder why they couldn't deploy the oxygen-masks manually. At least there would have been the option to have the Autopilot landing on CAT3 at Cologne (with autobrakes set to max). Wouldn't that have been an ermegency solution?
Greetings
