A380 Pitch and Altitude Acquisition

Post by nicsilo » 02 Aug 2010, 22:50

First of all, thanks to Project Airbus for the A380 (and their other releases too, of course); the model truly looks fantastic. However, I can't for the life of me manage to fly it properly, this after a number of attempts and reading the "How to fly the A380" post and conducting step climbs with reasonable fuel/payloads. I am experiencing two major (all things being relative; it won't prevent me from sleeping tonight) problems:

1) The first problem I have is that the autopilot seems unable to acquire any altitude, i.e. the aircraft will porpoise uncontrollably at very steep angles (this being independent of the altitude setting or the VS on the AP); and
2) if and when I do manage, through slewing and other such features unavailable on a real aircraft, to reach an altitude, the aircraft will assume a pitch between 20 and 25 degrees, which seems excessive to me.

Any thoughts? Is all this to say that I have to fly the plane manually? In any event, I really like Project Airbus's rendition of the A380, and I just want to fly it, really.

Thanks!

Welcome nicsilo. Are you running the A380 with fuel-tanks over 60% full? Reducing the F.O.B. (fuel on board) to between 30%-40% will help this bird get up to its M0.85 cruise speed and the AOA (angle of attack) should reduce to around 5 degrees. Also the aft of the aircraft should not have too many pax or cargo. Try move the weight forwards, but not too much.
Have you read the manual on the forum? If not, there you will find some good pointers to how to get the config correct.
But I do logically suspect that it is a fuel issue as I have the same problem with 90%-100% FOB.
